Crypto-currency Mining using Cow dung in an innovative way

Crypto-currency is seen as one of the investment options for many of the investors across globe, it is seen as alternate for Gold by many investors however there are some controversies looming around  digital currencies always but investors are known for their risk taking abilities keep on investing due to its higher returns.

Tesla had announced earlier that they would accept Bitcoin for their cars, also Elon Musk had invested USD 1.5 Billion in Bitcoin, this move had lead to a jump in bitcoin prices and provided very high returns to investors.

Elon Musk recently in a TV show expressed a different view on Crypto-currencies that Crypto mining is bad for environment as it consumes lot of energies which are made from non-renewable resources like Coal and it also causes pollution to environment.

Yes, it is true that Crypto mining requires high energy due to its need of lot of computational power. As well, if we compare Bitcoin transaction and a payments provider transaction like Visa, Bitcoin can process seven transactions per second at most - that's its maximum capacity but a payments provider like Visa can do 65,000 transactions per second if needed.

An UK based farm owner, Philip Hughes uses anaerobic digestion method and mines crypto from Cow dung. A big six-cylinder engine running at 500rpm turns methane given off by decomposing cow manure into electricity. Left over is used as fertilizer.
This method proves to produce 25 times lesser harm to environment than other traditional methods.

Philip utilizes only one third of power generated for mining, remaining is consumed by his farm. Currently Philip is mining Ethereum as it consumes lesser energy than Bitcoin. In addition to anaerobic digestion, Solar & Wind Energy is also used to mine crypto-currencies at various places.

It seems that crypto mining can provide return to owners of renewable power generation with almost 10 times return than selling to power generation companies which may vary from one country to the other.

Strengthening of USD benefits exporters in long term ???

International trades usually happens in USD terms across the globe between countries. We always used to hear that when USD got strengthen against INR or INR got weaken against USD it benefits the exporters because their realization in INR values is more. Is it really benefits exporters in long term?

We will see a scenario now, we assume that an exporter from India export some merchandise to Singapore. On 1st January-20, 1 USD = 71.321 INR and 1 USD = 1.3453 SGD which reached to a level of 1 USD = 75.3677 INR and 1 USD = 1.4224 SGD on 31st March-20, it means USD got strengthen against both INR and SGD in that 3 months period, further if we calculate more precisely USD got strengthen 5.67% against INR and 5.73% against SGD.

We feel that the Indian exporter benefited 5.67% due to the currency fluctuation but his product became expensive by 5.73% in Singapore market. Does it really going to benefit the exporter? We can't say yes because though the exporter benefited in short term, his product became expensive due to which the exporter will lose future orders to a local supplier in local market or share of business will be taken away by local suppliers in Singapore market.

We should not have a feel that strengthening of USD will benefit the exporter, it will be true that if the Indian exporter is exporting to United States where his product's imported cost will remain same and also exporter realization value in terms of INR increases but if an exporter supplies to a country other than United States then appreciation / depreciation of USD against the other country currency (importing country) also needs to be considered to understand the actual benefit / loss.

Note : Above calculations are done considering only currency fluctuations, other factors affecting import cost like freight, duty, CHA charges, etc. not considered.

How to select right capacity (Ton) Air-Conditioner (AC) !!!

Air Conditioners has become one of the necessary appliances to overcome summer heat waves. Many of us plan to buy air conditioners but confused about which tonnage of AC to be purchased. Selecting low capacity machine will make you feel that the cooling is not sufficient and higher capacity will result in higher energy bills. This article will help you to select correctly sized air-conditioner to suit your requirement.
Cooling capacity of any air conditioner is measured in BTU/hr.
  • 1 Ton = 12000 BTU/hr
  • 1.5 Ton = 18000 BTU/hr
  • 2 Ton = 24000 BTU/hr
Actual BTU/hr of a model can be viewed in product catalogue / company website of manufacturer which you prefer to buy.

Generally we heard tonnage selection based on square feet of room, in order to select correct tonnage we have to consider other factors like height of the room, number of occupants in the room, lighting of the room, appliances that generate heat, etc.

Air conditioner cools entire room not only the surface area so calculate the volume of the room, volume = Length (ft) x Width (ft) x Height (ft). Multiple the volume in cubic feet by 6. Resultant value is the BTU/hr required to cool the room without considering other factors like number of occupants, appliance that generate heat etc.

Cooling load of 500 BTU/hr has to be considered for each occupant. In case of couple bedroom it shall be 1000 BTU/hr whereas for living room of a family of 6 would require 3000 BTU/hr.

Refrigerator is one of the appliances which is available in all household now-a-days, a refrigerator of 125W releases heat around 2000 BTU/hr.

Now we shall calculate BTU requirement of living room of size (20 ft x 15 ft x 10 ft) for a family of 6 members having refrigerator (125 W) in their living room.

Volume = 20 x 15 x 10 = 3000 cubic feet
BTU required by room = Volume x 6 = 18000 BTU/hr
BTU for 6 occupants = 6 x 500 = 3000 BTU/hr
BTU for refrigerator = 2000 BTU/hr

Total BTU = 23000 BTU/hr

2 Ton machine provides 24000 BTU/hr cooling capacity, family may select 2 Ton machine for their living room considering this.

We also need to make a note of lighting of room, east or west facing of room also plays a role in cooling requirement. In above example we have not considered the same. In general 10% extra load of cooling requirement is always preferred to take care of these kind of variations and higher ambient in summer. Considering this 23000 + 10% = 25300 BTU/hr will be required to cool living room.

Family needs to select a model above 2 ton for their living room, which can be 2.25 Ton (27000 BTU / hr) or 2.5 Ton (30000 BTU/hr) based on the model availability in market.

Hope this article clarifies on how to select right capacity (ton) air conditioner. If you have any queries or comments, please post here.
